Writing Research Project

Compare and contrast two digital technology artwork
Digital art is the use of digital technology and computer program by means of the analysis of pictures, audio and video files. Editing applications ultimately get the perfect upgrade works. It is widely used in the teaching and commercial design purposes of graphic design and three-dimensional technology that along with advances in technology to be accepted by the public and recognized by more and more artists to be keen about (Broeckmann).
Liqin Tan is a famous Chinese-American 3D animation artist. He serves as deputy director of the Board of Education of the Association of International graphic image. In recently years, he devotes to the Sino-US exchanges and cooperation of the three-dimensional animation art. He is repeatedly invited to return to lecture at Peking University and Tsinghua University. New Jersey, he is an art professor of computer animation in Rutgers State University, he is also an adjunct Professor that teaching 3D animation in the department of digital media at Peking University. His theoretical research field is related to a concept of animation, animation device, interactive animation, modern animation taxonomy, North America animation art criticism, the status quo of Chinese animation education, and contemporary Chinese art reviews.
He had been Disney hired as the animator. At the same time, he is largely committed to avant-garde 3D animation, animation device, and a variety of materials of 3D digital printing products. His original creation which is the form of the “digital primitive art” won the praise from the art circles of United States and other countries and has won the First Prize and Gold Medal of the International Digital Art Exhibition. His works is exhibited at the international digital art exhibition seminars and art Museum. The U.S. media calls him as the pioneers of the “revolutionary artist” and avant-garde three-dimensional animation, the first artist who uses three-dimensional animation digital technology printing in animal skins, raw wood, rocks and metal.
Digital-Primitive is a diverse multi-directional main exploration and innovation for Liqin Tan to create digital art, which through mastery of the original animal skins technology to create a modern digital art. On the contrary, the application of digital technology can produce a new model of primitive art. His explore research purposes are make digital technology and primitive ideas together, excavate ancient spirit and nature worship to communicate with today’s digital society. There are some differences between digital art and primitive technology. Digital art is transitory and limited, while primitive technology is eternal and unlimited. Any modern digital technology can be replaced, but the primitive concept permanently retains its own meaning. The modern technology of today may be tomorrow’s primitive skills.
Liqin Tan calls himself as a “digital natural artist” that creates the digital natural animated series entitled “Burl 4” and “Burl Hair”. The theme of his work is put digital burl into the nature of the five elements principle and make digital burl printed on the raw wood. Each digital printing product is along with water, golden, fire, wood, and soil animation LCD TV. He believes that human beings must change their original way of thinking to understand a new natural because it is not a kind of human familiar object, it is the new space of science and technology virtual for human soul.
One of his works is Grain Mill-Interactive Ani. Animation concept of this work is black and white have the concept of time memory, as memory that may be related to an evolution of the historic character. History are surprisingly similar that always repeat themselves indefinitely. This process of evolution and “grinding” motion coincide with each other in a circular motion of time and space, run over the elements into a new era of elements. The form of this work is use the Chinese traditional agriculture appliance milling process to express the aggression and destruction of traditional agriculture and traditional cultural life by industrialization. The roller in the work represents the mechanical civilization’s driving force. Machinery began to spread growth engulfed the wheat fields to achieve the ultimate effect of mechanization aggression. The software is animation 3d max software; the compositing software is adobe AfterEffect and Premier to achieve material splice, color correction, and production effects. The part development tools of device software are Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 and graphics library that contains OpenGL and directshow.
Liu Tao is an electronic arts organizations comprises the performance artist, multi-media artist, curator, writer, art critic, and engineers. His works are mainly interactive installation art and other works also include LED art, photography, modern sculpture and painting. The group as an electronic advanced collective that use multimedia technology and mainly related to the LED, interactive components, neon, photography, video, sculpture, and post-modern paintings. The collective’s LED artistic technique draw by themselves which including directors, actors, models, photographers, choreographers, and computer programmers. The art transmission of information is a signal on the chip through each LED unit that spread like a delicate senses of the human sensory system framework, through the physical world and into her mind. The image frames and a variety of three-dimensional scale with a multi-faceted.
Organic interaction between an object and human is embedded in the works. LED indicator lights is close to the mirror to change the reflection, stuffed animals talk, video telephony, and wooden masks through the use of optical sensors, GSM modules sonar range finder, microcontroller, and infrared sensors. Liu Tao also incorporates all the traditional photography to innovate contemporary art works of cultural value and aesthetic value. Modify antique negative collection mutations and morphological software combination, a combination of the same panoramic X-ray image with LED animation cooperation projects. Liu Tao’s taxidermy such as the evolution of modern sculpture techniques, computer-generated three-dimensional blueprint, neon installation, wire brushed stainless steel, the lighthouse and the decoration of furniture, all of which are collective conceived the idea of expansion and implementation. In recent years, Liu Tao has tried a series of video art project. Its signature fusion style, the video clips on the LCD screen is amazing that integrated with traditional antique furniture or Chinese paper-cut. The result is a stunning and evocative query to the meaning of “modern” and “traditional”.
For the collective creative practice and the concept of innovation, Liu Dao is almost unique and unparalleled. The concept of collective creation has led to the formation of a laboratory. In the laboratory, the artists use new media and a creation way of interdisciplinary to process the contemporary experimental art exploration. Visual arts, new technology media, sports, dance, improvisation techniques of the new technology, archive records, and field fabrication as well as works by the co-authored are integrated into the exploration of the artists that become the positive dominant factor. The important significance of Liu Dao is that it is the combination of excellent artist. It evokes a sense of collectivism and zooms in pursuit of their experience, knowledge and creativity.
Both in form innovation and concept publicity for Liu Dao groups of artists are trying to deepen people’s understanding and awareness of the diversity of contemporary art, which are corresponding to the cultural diversity. Liu Dao is not only a group of art, but also it goes beyond or greatly inspired the artists of the world and projects involved. The influence has gone beyond the national boundaries. Liu Dao tries takes viewers to the line of sight of the reach high-resolution photos on the LCD screen and flashing animation products in the pinup picture. For example, the “Long Gone Fou Foong Flour Mill depicts the difficult wandering story of a young woman on the edge of two worlds - she is eager to embrace the new world and hesitated afraid to accept the change. Liu Dao are always been fascinated by science and technology that inject to life in order to make it more vivid.
In conclusion, compare and contrast Liqin Tan’s work and Liu Dao’s work. Liqin Tan’ work conveys an opinion that is in this era of digital culture, digital technology penetration in our daily lives. The digital primitive art aimed at from the point of view of the natural humanities to create and present a modern visual effects, so that people looking for a concise manner to communicate between the ancient and modern, past and future, old and new, primitive and technology concise manner in order to maintain a high-tech, high emotion, high cultural balance. Liu Dao put the electronic media, computer graphics, interactive installations, different size and brightness of the diode, interactive sound creation, as well as all kinds of mixed innovative approach integrated into the exploration of contemporary art. Their work reflects an inevitable revolt that has been formation the iconography, dialectics, and market collusion.

Why it is no relationship between interactive media and computer-based media?  Do you agree with the literal interpretation of interactivity plays an important role that is a process which including film, VR, and photography?

Gallery critique “On earth as it is in heaven”

The painting “on earth as it is in heaven” was created by artist Chester Arnold in 1997. It is a beautiful contemporary artwork, which is exhibit at the Nevada Museum of Art. It required for the museum by Mr. William Abernathy in memory of Janet L. Abernathy. The painting attracted me because of the peaceful landscape. I saw that cottages harmonize well with the environment, so I abandoned myself to the serene landscape. I did some research and learned that the artist hopes to remind people have to reflect on the relationship between human activities and natural environment. I think this painting was intended to caution people should be pay attention to the protection of the environment where we live and be considering about control pollution.
“On earth as it is in heaven” looks like many trees are sawn wood in the picture. After I did some research I know that the Gothic cathedral is a factory on the mountains. Furthermore, The mountains are the richest in the world that includes mine and an industrial city. There are a lot of conifers stand tall and upright on the mine’s mountains and some emits clouds of gray smoke from factory is spreading out in the sky. The painting was made out of oil that was oil on canvas. Chester Arnold’s painting is a weirdly interesting combination of lush classical painting techniques and biting social criticism. Oil painting is a creation way with pigment. It’s becoming one of the most popular painting techniques. First of all, it has a strong expression. For instance, it can be covering for many times and painting over and over again. Second, it has the bright color and high saturation, so the color is difficult to change. Third, it can be repeatedly revised that has a strong plasticity. Unlike watercolor, gouache are dry very quickly, it is not easy to modify if people does not draw it well. Palette and palette knife can save the waste of color and adjust the color more even. Artists usually express theirs opinion through painting. There are several types of techniques that artist use them to create this work, such as impasto, alla prima, and sgraffito. For impasto painting, painter use brush with thick color to keep the shape of painting surface. Alla prima painting not only makes the color fresh, but also delays the dry time to remain the painting wet on the canvas. Therefore, the painter can continue to manipulate the work before it become dry. Sgraffito is a traditional technique of oil paint. It also can make painting dry slowly so that the artists have enough time to create their work.

Dr. Rocio Aranda-Alvarado’s lecture critique

The first figure is the destruction of art movement in the mid-1960s by Rafael Montanez Ortiz. The destroyed works and performance ways for him is explored, especially in his work about the terms of the destruction and contemporary culture. The second figure is Agustin Fernandez, who immigrated to New York City as an adult to live the rest of his life.  His work deeply influenced by subculture of punk and New York’s gay. The photographer Sophie Rivera was looking for a way in order to extend the Puerto Rican exists in the public eye in the 1980s. Her work considered through a series of portraits. Both of the artists which including the photographer Sophie Rivera and sculptor Elia Alba are explore ideas about race, gender, physical and performance that create work with digital images and fabrics. The discussion of these artists’ work is an interactive between the artists and contemporary American culture and theirs participation.
